T(r)oy's Marbles

blanca's big mistake

When we walk the kids to school, most mornings we'll pass a lady on the street corner named Blanca. I wrote something about her a while ago, telling how Meaghan and Nic now exchange "dos besos" with her most days.

What I failed to mention in that post was that, on the walk back home from school, Blanca will also make a point to give our dog Lexi some extra love by taking the time to give her a half dozen good pats and strokes. Blanca will bend over, cooing and saying little things like "¡Qué bonita!" and "¿Cómo estás, chica?". Sometimes Blanca will comment on how good Lexi is. Once, when she said this I gave Blanca the real story: "The truth is, Lexi is a very naughty dog," I told her. But there's no convincing Blanca otherwise--she likes Lexi and has proven to be a loyal friend to our misfit dog. And Lexi, in turn, seems to like Blanca. At least it appears so.

This morning, however, something different happened. As I stopped to let Blanca pet Lexi, Blanca had a surprise: a doggie treat.

Blanca held out her hand, but Lexi didn't know what Blanca was doing at first so Lexi just kept sniffing the ground, looking around for other dogs. Blanca persisted in offering Lexi the treat, however, and eventually Lexi came to her senses, gobbling up the tasty morsel.

I said thanks to Blanca and then went on my way. But Lexi was not following. She stood on her hind legs and waved her paws in the air as if to say, "More please!" Blanca laughed, dug into her bag and took out another treat. Lexi gobbled that up and got in her begging posture yet again, hoping for still more. This time, however, Blanca did not have any more to offer Lexi, so Blanca simply smiled and said, "Ohhhh, pobrecita".

All I have to say is, it was like trying to pull an airliner with my teeth, getting Lexi to move from her spot. All the way across the intersection she kept looking back, trying to pull away from me. I practically had to pick her up to get her across the street before the cars started coming from the other direction.

Blanca: you don't know it now, but you've just made a big mistake! Lexi will be looking for more snacks tomorrow. I hope for your sake you have some, mi amiga!
